Fusing Art with Health and Relaxation

The Art Gallery & Pool Building in Groton, MA, merges two distinct functions within a single structure; showcasing the artwork of the late Otto Piene and housing a 40-foot lap pool with an integrated hot tub. The building's design thoughtfully addresses moisture and humidity control through a specialized building envelope, featuring an air barrier and rigid insulation on the interior. This 1,327-square-foot project seamlessly combines art with exercise and relaxation, creating an efficient multi-use building where artistic expression, movement and leisure coexist harmoniously.

Project Highlights:

  • Architectural Harmony: The vaulted fir ceiling, supported by stainless steel cables, frames Piene's art in a museum-like setting.
  • Lighting and Ventilation: Solar-powered skylights illuminate the space naturally while aiding in ventilation.
  • Connector Design: A connecting sitting area links the existing house to the pool gallery, offering views of the art studio and outdoor sculptures.
